Behind The Scenes - Barista or Bartender?

After a couple of years of part time jobs, Sarah found her love at the bar. With her first job as a coffee house waitress at Saujana Hotel, Sarah moved to Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie two years ago to join the bar team at Glen Lounge, located at the Lobby level.

Sarah is part of a small, well-established team at Glen and runs both as a barista and a bartender. She also frequently participates in special events, such as the recent MIGF Gala Launch.

Q: Working at Glen Lounge sees you working closely with two ingredients: coffee and alcohol. DO you see yourself more as a barista or bartender?
A: Equal amounts of both, however I prefer working with coffee.
Q: What's your specialty as a barista?
A: SMILING!! (And she flashed a big smile)
Q: What is the best thing about working here?
A: The Glen Team is awesome! We don't have any quarrels among ourselves and work better together all the time. I have good supervisors and seniors too. It's easy to talk to them. Plus, I always have an opportunity for cross exposure.

A: I always have an opportunity to work at Banquet, or go for Outside Catering. Before working at Banquet, I didn't know how to serve a Chinese Set Dinner. Now I'm a pro at serving VIP tables! Also, I'm always glad to be chosen for special events. I was part of the service team for our Holiday Inn Relaunch, and recently the MIGF Gala Launch. From the MIGF Gala Launch, I learnt a lot about Fu-Rin and its cuisine. I'm a better communicator now and am not scared to face VIPs, Ministers etc.

So don't forget to visit Glen Lounge the next time you're at Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie for a cuppa (or a pretty smile!)

Mooncake Mania @ Glen Lounge

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is a popular harvest festival celebrated by the Chinese dating back over 3,000 years to moon worship in China's Shang Dynasty. It is also sometimes referred to as the Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival.The Mid-Autumn Festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, and the traditional food of this festival is the mooncake, of which there are many different varieties.

Outlet Operations During Hari Raya

Please note that in conjunction with the Hari Raya celebrations, our restaurant and buffet closures will be as follows:

Kites Restaurant
• Buffet Lunch and Dinner will be closed from 10th til 19th September, Sunday. Buffet Breakfast will run as usual during this period. A la carte will run as usual.
• The restaurant will be closed on 16th and 17th September 2010 to make way for refurbishment works. On these two days, breakfast will be served at Fu-Rin from 6am – 10.30am. Guests from the Executive levels guests are advised to consume their breakfast at the Executive Lounge.
• All operations will resume full swing on 20th September 2010, Monday.

Fu-Rin Japanese Restaurant
• Fu-Rin will be closed on 10th September 2010.
• Operation times for 11th and 12th September 2010 will be as usual, however there will be no Saturday dinner buffet or Sunday lunch buffet (a la carte only).
• Fu-Rin will resume its normal operations on 13th September 2010.

All other outlets will operate as usual.
We apologise for the inconvinience caused.

We've announced some time ago that Fu-Rin will be participating in the Malaysia International Gourmet Festival 2010. Here's some brief information on what's going to be happening and what you can expect!

MIGF 2010
Malaysia International Gourmet Festival aims to market Festival Restaurants. During the Festival, the country’s top restaurants put aside their differences and join together in a collective marketing effort – a month-long gourmet extravaganza. Festival Restaurants are recognized by Malaysian diners as the country’s finest – the crème de la crème. Each restaurant serves its own Festival Menu together with a host of attractive Festival Offers.

Fu-Rin Japanese Restaurant
There is a first time for everything, and Fu-Rin is absolutely delighted and geared-up to be part of the Festival this year. Our chef has put together an authentic Japanese feast, and the careful wine pairing for our Festival menu features a full range of white wines, something rarely seen. The team is really creating magic, true to the festival theme. Get ready to be surprised!

MIGF Gala Launch
Date: 21st September 2010
Venue: Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre
This Launch will see 2,000 of the nation’s premier fine diners – society figures and corporate leaders – along with local and international food writers attending a spectacular display from all Festival Restaurants. The restaurants will serve-up tasting portions of their Festival Menus at individually created stations.

Epicure 2010
Date: 17th – 19th September 2010
Venue: Sime Darby Convention Centre
Held in conjunction with the award winning MIGF, Epicure Malaysia is the nation’s leading food, wine and lifestyle fair.
Fu-Rin’s Chef Mike Yip will be conducting a Master Chef Class on 18th September 2010.

Fu-Rin’s Festival Menu
The festival menu (attached) will be available at Fu-Rin throughout the month of October. This will be a perfect time for first timers who want to avoid the complexities of choosing from an a la carte menu to enjoy this beautiful creation and pairing of authentic Japanese cuisine and modern western wines.
All Festival Diners will also be able to enjoy Festival Offers ranging from further discounts for future dining at Fu-Rin, cigar discounts, beverage discounts and even birthday promotions.

Cooking Class at Fu-Rin
Chef Mike will be conducting a cooking class at Fu-Rin in conjunction with MIGF on 16th October 2010. This class will allow participants to learn traditional Japanese dishes and later enjoy a sumptuous Japanese lunch and takeaway a goodie bag complete with a starter kit to go home and prepare the dishes they have learnt.
Festival Diners will be eligible for a special price of RM 90++ per person (NP: RM 105++ per person).
