Behind The Scenes - Running Restaurants!

Paramjeet Singh

We enjoy introducing to the our team members who run the operations! This time, let us introduce you to Paramjeet Singh, our coffee shop manager.
Affectionately known as Param by team members, this young manager started his career in the hotel industry in 1999 in this very property back when it was still a Pan Pacific. After moving through numerous outlets and positions, this self-made man is now sitting comfortably with a stable team, leading the all-day dining restaurant at Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie.

Q: What was your first job?
A: I worked in a forwarding company.

Q: Why did you decide to join the hotel line?
A: One day I realised that I needed a stable job, and I actually followed my elder sister to the hotel to get interviewed.
 Q: What did you join this hotel as?
A: I joined as a waiter at the Hotel's Pub back in 1999. I was then transferred to Glen Lounge, and back to The Pub after that. Back at The Pub, I was promoted to a captain and then as a supervisor. I was also at one point transferred to Kites, Fu-Rin and Banquet. Wow! So many outlets when you think about it!

Q: How do you feel about it?
A: I feel good! I mean, I know a lot, and nobody can try to fool me. I think I can survive anywhere!

Q: What's the best thing about working in Holiday Inn KL Glenmarie?
A: The best thing is the chances to grow here. I've grown and developed myself from nothing.

Q: What's your best memory in this property?
A: It was when I was recognised by the General Manager for my performance for the year. At that time, The Pub was not doing well. I was just an Assistant Manager. I was transferred there and challenged to 'show them what I can do'. I tried my best, and for the whole year, my outlet showed excellent results. I was then promoted to Restaurant Manager and transferred to the coffee house. It was a proud year for me. I must say, I have learnt a lot in this hotel.

Q: If you could tell people one thing about yourself and your job that would surprise them, what would it be?
A: You know I actually was not educated at a high level when I joined this hotel. I learnt everything I know now from being here. When I joined this hotel, I couldn't not speak English. Nor could I read or write. Now I speak better than my seniors!
Imagine, when I started my salary was only RM 700. I worked hard, tried my best and picked up skills. It was a long journey, but I'm glad to be where I am from where I started!

Well Param! We're glad you have had a great run so far! With such an inspiring story, we're sure that Param will continue to motivate his young team and develop future leaders too!

Param has also been recently nominated as F&B's Manager of the Quarter by his peers. Congratulations!
